Jean Baptiste Camille Corot was a French painter, who was born on July 16, 1796 in a family of merchants.

Neoclassical training, he was influenced by his French counterpart Victor Bertin, who learned the principles of classical composition, characterized the landscapes of his works: Forum (1826) and The Bridge at Narni (1827). He toured Europe making small oil sketches that are among the first French painted directly natural landscapes. Since 1845, after having achieved great critical success, he began to sell his work.

Then, his landscapes were becoming imaginary creations: Remembrance of Mortefontaine (1864, Louvre). He painted extraordinary works as The Belfry at Douai (1871, Louvre). Capturing the very atmosphere of the outdoors and the study of light, placed within the genealogy of Impressionism.

Not lacking in his painting portraits and studies of human figures. It was a simple and generous man with his friends and students, both in terms of money and time (he even signed pictures of some lucky fellow) which earned him the nickname of père Corot (father Corot). He died on February 22, 1875 in Paris.
