It is estimated that there are currently between one thousand and eight hundred million Muslims in the world, making Islam the second religion in the world, relative to its number of followers after Christianity. By constitutional mandate on January 16, 1956, Islam became the religion of Egypt.
Islam began with the preaching of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in the year 620 in Mecca (now Saudi Arabia). Under his leadership, and his successors,
Islam spread rapidly through religious conversion or military conquest. At present there are Muslims around the world, particularly in the Middle East, North Africa, Asia, America, Europe and South America.
