The chemical structure of DNA is discovered.

On this day in 1953 scientists at the University of Cambridge James D. Watson and Frances HC Crick announced the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA. Deoxyribonucleic acid,

known as DNA, was discovered in 1869, but only in 1943 demonstrated its key role in determining genetic inheritance. In the 1950s, many scientists tried to figure out the structure of this molecule, including the California chemist Linus Pauling, who proposed an incorrect model in early 1953. On the morning of February 28 of that year,

Watson and Crick determined that DNA structure is a polymer of a spiral or double helix two strands twisted together, each containing a long-chain nucleotide. The discovery of Watson and Crick was officially announced on April 25, 1953, with the publication of his article in the journal Nature. Since then many important advances in the study of biology and medicine, including genetically modified foods, the design of treatments for diseases such as AIDS and the ability to detect occurred
