Cloning of Dolly the sheep was announced.

Dolly was the first mammal cloned from an adult cell on 5 July 1996. Its creators were scientists at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh (Scotland), Ian Wilmut and Keith Campbell.

His birth was not announced until seven months later, on 23 February 1997. Dolly was the result of a nuclear transfer from differentiated donor cell to an unfertilized and enucleated (coreless) egg implanted after a carrier female.

The cell of coming Dolly was a specialized cell from a particular tissue -the mamaria- gland of an adult animal (Fin Dorset sheep six years), which was a novelty, until then it was believed that only could obtain an embryonic cell clones, that is not specialized.

Five months after Dolly was born, he was the only lamb resulting from mergers 277 enucleated oocytes with nuclei of breast cells. In 1999 they were detected symptoms of arthritis, likely due to premature aging. He was sacrificed on Friday February 14, 2003, due to a very common lung disease in adult sheep
