Last eruption of the volcano Mauna Loa. |
The Mauna Loa volcano is one of the most active in the Hawaiian Islands and one of the five volcanoes that form the island of Hawaii along with those of Mauna Kea, Hualalai, Kohala and Kilauea.
There have been about 33 eruptions of Mauna Loa in historical times, most recently on March 11, 1984. That eruption was recorded as the most recent Mauna Loa occurred from March 11 to April 15, 1984. No eruption has caused deaths, but the eruptions of 1926 and 1959 destroyed villages, and the city of Hilo is partly built on lava flows from the late nineteenth century.
In view of the dangers to human settlements, Mauna Loa is part of the Decade Volcanoes program, which encourages the study of the most dangerous volcanoes. Mauna Loa has been intensively monitored by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO for its acronym in English) since 1912.
The observations in the atmosphere are collected by the Mauna Loa Observatory, and the sun in the Mauna Loa Solar Observatory, both located near to the top.
