A historical step towards artificial intelligence.

A historical step towards artificial intelligence.

A group of Swedish researchers has taken an extraordinary step on the path of development of non-biological intelligence, to build the first artificial neuron able to mimic the function of cells of the nervous system,

ie, transform chemical signals into electrical impulses and communicate with other cells. Explains Agneta Richter-Dahlfors, director of the study to be published in the journal Biosensors and Bioelectronics, this artificial neuron "is made of conductive polymers and works as a human (...) cell

The sensory component of the artificial neuron is able to perceive changes chemical and then translate them into electrical signals. Then, this signal triggers the release of a neurotransmitter (called acetylcholine), which can have effect on human cells. " Researchers continue to work in this direction, and try to reduce the size of the synthetic neuron (now the size of a finger) to deploy human, in order to repair damaged cells and developing treatments for neurological disorders, spinal damage or wrong Parkinson.

It is the first time that, in addition to using external electrical impulses to stimulate the cells are achieved by incorporating a synthetic chemical element signals. So artificial intelligence, this time, will hand human intelligence, which "brings new and exciting opportunities for future research in the treatment of neurological diseases."
