The December 13, 2003 the former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was captured after spending several months in hiding because of the US invasion of their country.
Born near Baghdad in 1937, Hussein joined the Baath party, which later would lead. He participated in several coup attempts until, in July 1968, his cousin became dictator of Iraq.
11 years later, Saddam took over, where it remained for 24 years. During his tenure, in the early 1980s, the country went to war against Iran. The war lasted eight years and because of it more than a million people died. In 1991 the United States invaded Iraq for the first time, but Saddam remained in power. During that decade, Saddam faced economic sanctions by the UN, air strikes and allegations concerning the illegal sale of oil and weapons manufacturing.
During the second US invasion of Iraq, the December 13, 2003 the dictator was found in his hideout and arrested by American soldiers. After being held in custody, Hussein was sentenced to death by hanging for crimes against humanity. His execution took place on 30 December 2006. Despite an intensive search, weapons of mass destruction were never found in Iraq.
